Running Accomplishments:

I ran Varsity Track and Field in high school and was primarily a sprinter (100m, 200m). I also did the 400m, 4x400m, long jump and triple jump. Sprinting comes most naturally to me, but I am opening myself up to trying new things and increasing my endurance. I didn't get into running any long distance events until I met Benn and I'm still getting used to it!

Short-Term Running Goals:

I sprained my ankle the night before Thanksgiving 2008 which forced me to come back from that injury. Right now I am primarily doing running workouts in the 5k range, hiking, trail running, and some cycling. I also do lot of stretching and some free weight exercises, along with some cardio & yoga here and there.

Long-Term Running Goals:

 To stay healthy and active. To make exercise a permanent part of my life. To act as a roll model for wellness.

Personal:

I live in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology. Am currently working at a day spa but am taking steps to work in a laboratory. Getting marriedto the guy of my dreams, Benn, in October 2010 and am honored to be able to spend the rest of my life with him. Lots of excitement and planning to do, but taking it all in "stride".

Had another busy day today but needed to make the time to get some structured exercise in. I did Power 90 Cardio 3-4 (kickboxing, running, jumping jacks, power yoga, arm work, tons of leg work..) Going to see my almost 2-year-old neice later tonight! Gotta go clean up and "toddler-proof" the house!

Ran on the treadmill this morning for 3.15 miles all at 2% incline. Did the first 2 miles at 6.3-6.7 mph. Stretched and jumped back on for the rest at 7.0mph. LOTS to do today, plus an almost 2-year-old running around like crazy!!

It's about time to get back into the swing of things! FINALLY back home and did Power90 3-4 this afternoon. Included power yoga, jumping jacks, running, leg work, arm work, kickboxing, etc! I have TONS to do today but I hope to at least do crunches before bed.

Went to the YMCA with Benn and Su in NY. Did a bit over 30 minutes on some elliptical/stairstepper hybrid machine. Then took a dip in the hottub and headed back to their house to make dinner. Yummmmm I'm starving!

Finally got myself back on a treadmill!!! Did 3.5 miles of running at 2% incline. Ran the first 5 minutes as a warm up at 6.0-6.2mph. Stretched the legs and ran the rest of the way at 6.5mph with intervals at 7.0mph. Watched the Winter X Games which helped to occupy me. It is one of the only sports I have seen on tv and am actually entertained watching it. Probably because of the constant cool flips and the potential for huge crashes. Don't get me wrong... I don't want to see anybody get hurt. That's terrible! But the suspense at every landing keeps me going!

Ran on the treadmill again tonight (all at 2% incline). Started out at 6.2mph and quickly revved it up to 6.5mph for the first 6 minutes. Kicked up the speed again to 7.0mph with some intervals at 7.5mph. Ran the last 5 minutes or so at a constant 7.5mph. Then lightly jogged a mile cool down at 5.0mph. Finished up with lots of stretching.

It felt better last night and now it hurts again this morning- I even have a tiny bit of new pain in my arch I think, directly across from where the original pain on the bottom/side of my foot hurts. I want -- need -- to exercise but I am not sure what I can do without making it worse. I guess I am just stuck with crunches and free weights???

Had a bit of time this evening to exercise on the elliptical. Did 30 minutes alternating from resistance levels 5 and 6. Swung my arms around a lot to try to burn more calories.

Just not happy lately... I feel like a shadow of myself. I hope I feel better soon. I hate this feeling.

Did another half hour on the elliptical this morning. Started out at level 4 resistance for the first 10 minutes for a warm up. My legs were still a little sore from last night on the elliptical. For the last 20 minutes, alternated between level 5 and 6 resistances. Stretched a lot afterward.

Was at Benn's house on super bowl weekend. Then packed him up and moved him here to my house! SO EXCITED to spend lots of time with him. I can't wait for nice weather to get to go on adventures with him!

Worked out on the elliptical tonight while Benn ran on the treadmill. Did a 8 minute warm up at resistance level 4, then amped it up for intervals at resistances 5 and 6. Very hot in the basement but I am glad Benn encouraged me to have an exercise date with him. Stretched afterward.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Benn had to work until 5:30pm in Saratoga, so I didn't get to see him until tonight. Meanwhile, I did a lot that I needed to get accomplished, as well as cleaned the house, made a little Valentine's gift for Benn, and baked a spiced squash pie from scratch! Also got to run on the treadmill right before he got home. Did the first 10 minute warm-up at 6.5mph and then jumped off to stretch. Then got back on at 7.5mph with intervals at 7.0mph for the rest of the run. Felt good! Stretched again and met Benn upstairs for dinner!

Got home from Boston today and had an exercise date with Benn this evening. Went on the elliptical while Benn ran on the treadmill. Did the first 4 minutes warm up at level 4 resistance. Then amped it up to resistance levels 5 and 6 with a couple short intervals at level 7. Then did a total of 260 crunches (9 different positions @ 25 each and 1 position @ 30).

Had an exercise date with Benn tonight. He ran on the treadmill while I used the elliptical. I started out at resistance level 4 for a few minutes and then increased the resistance to level 5 for a few more minutes. Then I increased to resistance level 6 and did intervals at level 7. Once I hit the 25 minute mark, I took a 2 or 3 minute break to do warmed-up leg stretches. Hopped back on for more intervals at levels 6 and 7. Finished up and did more stretching, leg lifts, and a few lunges.  Then stretched again of course! (I love the stretching part!!)

Took turns with Benn for running on the treadmill. All at 2% incline, I ran the first mile warm up at 6.2-6.3mph. Then ran the bulk of the run at 6.3-6.4mph. Did the last mile at 7.0mph with a 2-minute interval at 9.0mph. Whewph! Then did a 0.12 mile cool down at a 4.3mph walk. Stretched. Having a little pain in the back of my heel- not sure what that's about.

Shoveled the driveway, the deck, and a path to the front door in the snow storm for about an hour. Had to dig the end of my driveway out 3 times because of the plows. My arms kinda ached toward the end and my lower back totally sucks when I shovel. But, at least I got a bit of a workbout. Shoveled for a half hour outside today around 3pm. Having a hard time thinking of new ideas for dinner and I don't want to disappoint Benn after a long day of work.. Felt kind of blah and had a headache today.

Took a break and went upstairs for some food (an apple, a mango, and a bagel!). After I felt better, I got back on the treadmill again at 6.5mph for 6 minutes and then amped it up to 7.0mph for the remained of my 3.55 mile run. Afterward, I did leg lifts and stretches. I will probably do crunches tonight when Benn runs on the treadmill.

Then got off to do several leg stretches, leg lifts, and a teeny-tiny bit of power yoga. Got back on the elliptical for a tad over 10 minutes at resistance level 5 with intervals at level 6. Finished up with more stretching.

Ran on the treadmill today. All at 2% incline, started off the first 17 minutes at 6.2mph pace. Got off to stretch the leggers and hopped back on for the next 8-ish minutes at 7.0mph. Got a call from my dad this morning asking me to go for a walk with him. He walks nearly every day so I said yes, geared up (mittens, fleece jacket, earband) and headed out. We started at a causeway on Onota Lake and walked at a moderate pace onto Churchill St. and back again, totaling 5.25 miles in 1:17 (about 14.6 min/miles). It was a refreshing walk past two fields with horses and near the Pittsfield State Forest. There weren't too many cars either, which made it quite peaceful :)

Benn and I went jogging on Cadwell Road, running from the causeway (Dan Casey Memorial Drive) at Onota Lake and back again. I ran the first 3 miles with Benn and then he sped up and ran 2 miles of tempo. When he circled back to get me, I saw him sprinting the .10 miles toward me. We finished up together to the car and ran a loop of the causeway to get her to 6 miles. I felt good- just my legs were tired! Stretched afterward... goo time!

Got a call from my dad around 8am this morning. He wanted me to go hike Monument mountain with him around 10am, so of course I said yes! We got there and began our hike but it was still pretty icy in the forest. We got a bit uneasy about the safety and were slipping everywhere, so we decided to turn around and just go for a long walk on the roads. We ended up doing a 4.5 mile round-trip, stopping for a snack around 11am (yummy organic green teas with a cup of black bean veggie soup for me and a garden pita for my dad). A bit windy and shady at times but mostly sunny out today!

Went for a jog later when Benn got home. Ran our route on Churchill St. again. I jogged the first mile with him and then did intervals of walking and jogging, while sprinting downhills. Met back up with Benn as he was on his way back on the loop, so I jogged with him for another 1/2 mile. The did more intervals of jogging and walking with sprinting down hills. Stretched afterward and headed home!

Stretched and then continued to run at 6.3mph up to 6.8mph with long intervals at 7.0mph. Also did one or two incline intervals of 2.5% and 3.0% grade. Finished up with a cool down at 4.9mph & 2.5% incline. Stretched again and called it a night.

Went running with Benn on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail after work today. I ran the first 3.1 miles out with him and then turned around to do the same mileage back. Once I got back to the beginning, I did a tiny bit of walking around to cool down and then headed back out on the trail walking at a moderate pace until I saw Benn approaching. By the last mile he was flying and I sprinted the end with him. Did cool down stretches and went home :)

Went for a 56 minute hike with my dad this afternoon after running errands all morning. We hiked monument mountain but I had to go a little slower than usual to let my dad keep up with me. He had to take two small breaks but not bad for a 59-year-old! His dad (my grandpa) died a week ago today and it  was good to get away from everything. Thet mountain was wet as it was sprinkling and it had been raining for the past 2 days. My dad slipped a couple of times and, on our way down the mountain, I slipped on a wet root and took a fall. I fell on my left side but knocked my inner right knee on a rock and scraped my left wrist and palm on a rock. I'm okay, but I have an egg on my knee and little cuts on my wrist and hand. Youch.

Did 3.45 miles on the elliptical today after work. Had it on fat burn mode (the mode that looks like a plain with a bunch of plateaus) and amped up the resistance. It is still softer on my knees than running, and right now I need to recover from this sore bruised egg on my knee!

Did a tad over an hour bike ride with Benn on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail after work. "We rode out 30:00 with the wind, and then battled it on the way back, coming in the second half in 31:48. Not bad however too considering how many people we had to dodge, not to mention roller bladers, toddlers, Chihuahuas on 20' leashes and bimbos." (taken from Benn's blog - hehe).

Sunny and temperature in the low 70s. Went running with Benn at Spa Park in New York after church with the Griffin family. Harry decided to come too to go longboarding while Benn and I ran. We opted for a short, faster run. We were really slicing and dicing at the end,  running 4:58 pace the last bit. Splits were: Mile 1: 9:06 Mile 2: 7:53 Mile 3: 7:56

I used resistance level 9 with 3 intervals (of 4-5 minutes each) of resistance levels 10 & 11. Sweat a lot and felt good. Afterward, I hopped onto the rowing machine and rowed for a tad over 5 minutes straight. Finished up by stretching my arms and neck and then heading over to the treadmill for a cool down of 6.4mph to around 5mph. Stretched legs and everything, changed, and headed out to Dottie's Cafe for a tea date with Benn :)

Did a 21 minute workout at the gym after work today. Did intervals on the elliptical for 15 minutes on resistance levels 9-11. Then did 6 minutes of straight rowing on the rowing machine. Had to leave the gym early to pick my mom up from work and take her home. When I got home Benn wanted me to go running with him, so  we did a tad over 4 miles from the causeway into the State Forest in Pittsfield. I hate him when I am tired and my legs are drained during a run, but I am so happy he "makes" me go. I'm glad I can run without giving up and I am glad we can run together :)

Hiked up Ice Glen in STockbridge, MA with my dad today. Took the trail to the tower which took us 22 minutes at a moderate pace for the most part. On the way down, we decided to take another trail to the glen, which is an old glacial ice pass. It has enormous moss-covered boulders and caves. It's really neat and there is even snow left on the bottom of the pass.

Ran on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail with Benn today.  Felt fine on the way out but on the way back I really lost that good feeling and just wanted to stop - to walk- to go home. Ran up and down Monument mountain with Benn after I got out of work today. I hiked the big hills instead of ran them like Benn, so I guess I did interval training. There was a fairly clear view at the top despite a chance for showers. It was actually a gorgeous evening with near perfect temperature for this activity. Running down the mountain is the most fun part for me, being able to spring off of rocks and making my eyes and feet "think fast." Some spots are steep and some are stretches of rocks & roots though. A fun exercise date!

Cruddy, dreary day so Benn and I decided to the gym. Started off on the elliptical for 3.69 miles on "fat burn" mode with intervals at resistance levels 10 and 11. Then did a cool down on the treadmill next to Benn for 1.25 miles or so on hill intervals. Finished up with the rowing machine for 0.6 miles. Stretched arms and legs afterward and changed to get a dip in the hot tub. Strange... the water wasn't hot but just kind of warm... not even as hot as bath water. But, we relaxed for a few minutes in the bubbles before heading out.

Biked on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail from Pittsfield to Adams today. Stopped into BArT fr quite a bit to volunteer making and painting props for their school musical. Afterwards, we walked over to Subway to grab some lunch and then biked the 11 miles back to Pittsfield to do grocery shopping and such.

Ran 5.2 miles on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail with Benn today after work. Pretty warm and VERY sunny out. Benn was feeling yucky toward the end but he pulled through like a champ :)

Ran 4 miles on Yukon Ridge North across the road from Olivia's Overlook in the Richmond/Lenox, MA area. It was really neat and there was a lot of rolling hills and downhills during the last half of the trail, which was fun.  I guess the trails have about a 540 foot elevation gain - and my quads were feeling it during the first half of the trail run!

Ran on the Burbank Trail loop (in Yukon Ridge North) across the road from Olivia's Overlook in Richmond/Lenox. Ran the trail backward at first and met Benn on his long run. Turned around and finished his lap with him and then ran another full lap with him. It was very wet and rainy out and we saw a ton of little reddish orange newts. They were adorable and made the run a lot more interesting- especially trying not to step on them!

Went to the gym with Benn today. Did around 35 minutes on the elliptical on "fat burn" mode on intervals of resistance levels 8 and 9. Then did 6 minutes of rowing, and a handful of arm and leg exercises on the weight room machines.

Ran on Burbank Trail (part of Yukon Ridge North). Ran 3.55 miles of the trails there, and I also added another 0.45 miles for working up a sweat mowing the lawn and the back hill with the push mower today. Yay!

Did 45 minutes of weight training today. Started off with 13 minutes on the rowing machine and then weight room for 32 minutes. Then hit around in the racquetball room for about 10 minutes before joining an hour long "Bender Ball" fitness class. Worked up a sweat and sore muscles but felt a great core workout.

Spent the weekend in Chelsea, MA (right outside of Boston) helping a best friend, Missy, move into her new condo. We moved boxes up flights of stairs and painted, painted, painted!! So exciting and fun to help out! Look forward to returning again soon!

I didn't get the the trail until 4:15 so I booked and booked and booked to try to get there in time - I showed up 12 minutes late but had to wait around in the parking lot for a half hour because we are dysfunctional planners..

Went to an hour long "boot camp" class at the gym. Did a ton of free weight work and used the bender ball, lots of core body work, crunches and pushups mixed with some kickboxing moves, jumping jacks, and leg work.

What an overwhelmingly busy month I have had!!! No time to do anything I want or need to do.. too busy helping others do everything! Traveled across states during every weekend this month. Getting really stressed that I haven't been able to work out like I want to. Terrible, horrible, hectic day at work. Finally got on the elliptical after work and did the "Fat Burn" workout of solid intervals of resistance levels 11 and 9. Did a cool down at resistance level 11, then finally 10. Stretched afterward and drove home to make dinner for Benn.

Gym hours are shortened for the summer and close at 8:30pm on the weekdays. I think that stinks, but it is even worse on the weekends - Sat at 5:30. and Sun at 4:30pm. Yuck. Anyways, I went to the gym tonight while Benn went to the high school track. I did the elliptical on "Fat Burner" mode with plateaued intervals at resistance levels 11 and 12. Then switched over to the treadmill for a 10 minute cooldown. Started out slow at 4.9mph and graduated up to 6.0mph. Stretched my legs and went to the weight room to do some ab and arm exercises.

The workout included power yoga,  step, jumping jacks, running, leg work, kickboxing, etc. Afterward I stretched and did a free weight circuit and 4 sets of (4) lunges  and (12) squats (in 3 different squat positions). Stretched again.

Went running with Benn on Gulf Road. We ran into my coming back from dinner at Arizona Pizza. We went and tried to run on the trails that were made by the Crane Paper Company in Dalton, MA. The trails were pretty good, except that they aren't exactly marked well. Ran 15 minutes out decided to turn around the trails come out. Did a cool down jog and walk to the top of Golf Road while Benn took a cooldown in the opposite direction, then met back up at the car.

Went on a 3 mile run with Benn tonight on the roads by our house. Started at home and began up the hill to the top of Essex. Took a left and ran down Gale, taking a right at Redmond. After making it to the top of a hradual hill at the end of Redmond, took a right and headed over the railroad bridge on oswald over to the other parts of Gale again. Ran down the long hill and took a let onto Forthill. From there, went under the railroad bridge and took a slight right to the sencond half of Hungerford that connects to West Housatonic (route 20).  Took a left on W. Hoosie and headed straight all the way back to the bottom of Essex hill (of doom!). Made a pact to run it all the way to our house at the crest and amazingly, we did! Took a walk to the top end of our street and back as a cool down, then stretched.

Ran 2.5 miles on part of the 37 mile long McDade trail in PA with Benn. Lots of curves, steep inclines and declines along the Delaware River Gap. Beautiful day. Walked 2 miles of the trail afterward searching for our camera I thought I lost on the trail. Turns out I left it on the hood of the car. Doh!

I haven't been updating my running blog since the wedding last month. I'm finding it hard to get everything done and I'm tired all the time since the sun goes down around 4pm now. Uck. Got up and ran on the treadmill this morning before the loads of chores to do. Ran 4 miles @ 2% incline. Began a 5 minute warm-up at 6mph.
